Animal Management

Under Food Security program, we introduced Animal Management Initiative to enhance household nutrition, promote sustainable farming, and empower communities economically. Since its inception, the initiative has distributed 1,650 animals, including 400 ducks, 850 rabbits, and 400 chickens, to local farmers. This program is designed to not only provide immediate benefits but also ensure long-term impact through its innovative give-back policy. Under the give-back policy, each farmer receives two ducks, two chickens, and two rabbits. Once the animals multiply, the farmer is required to return an equal number to the program. These animals are then redistributed to other farmers, creating a self-sustaining cycle that extends the benefits to more households over time. This approach helps in promoting a sense of responsibility and collaboration among community members while maximizing the program’s reach. The initiative is making a profound impact on several fronts. On the side of nutrition, the eggs from chickens and ducks and the meat from rabbits offer families access to protein-rich food, improving diets and reducing malnutrition. For many households, this consistent source of nutrition is a vital supplement to their daily meals, particularly during times when other food sources may be scarce. Beyond addressing hunger, the animals contribute to improved agricultural productivity. Their manure is collected and used as organic fertilizer, enriching the soil and boosting crop yields. This natural farming input aligns with the broader goals of the Food Security Project, complementing other interventions like home gardens and agroforestry. Economically, the initiative provides a pathway for farmers to generate income. Surplus animals, eggs, and manure can be sold in local markets, offering households a much-needed financial boost. This income diversification strengthens resilience, especially for vulnerable families, and contributes to the local economy. Through the Animal Management Initiative, we are advancing a cycle of growth, sustainability, and shared responsibility through combining nutrition, economic empowerment, and sustainable practices, which in turn is helping farmers build more resilient and food-secure communities.
